The main difference lies in the fact that the decorator never modifies the building’s design by altering the walls and/or structure.
This is one of the key differences that makes the role of an interior architect involve much more responsibility. Indeed, unless the person is an architect-decorator, the individual responsible for decoration usually works more at the end of the process and is almost never the project manager.

Listening and observation
When a client approaches an interior decorator with the aim of giving a place a new look, the decorator starts by listening to understand what the client is looking for in order to guide their work: more space, more light, more storage, a retro ambiance, a minimalist style, a color harmony… Then, they present initial mood boards to get a clearer sense of the client’s expectations and create a final project that meets their needs and fits within their budget.
Design and conception
The interior decorator creates hand sketches and/or computer-generated designs, then develops plans and elevations of potential custom elements (woodwork) as well as 3D renderings featuring furniture, artwork, etc., which will help the client envision the new space and better visualize the proposed changes.
These elements are usually presented during an in-person meeting, supported by materials and samples of the materials used in the project.
The decorator will focus on creating a highly refined style, paying particular attention to the selection of furniture, art, and small accessories for the final result.

The decorator may also request quotes from the various craftsmen (carpenter, painter, cabinetmaker, plumber, mason, blacksmith, tiler, kitchen designer, etc.) involved in the project and provide them with work documents.
Follow-up and coordination
Often, the interior decorator coordinates the work of the various stakeholders throughout the project and monitors the progress of the site, regularly updating the client with progress reports.
